“Herd Health” was a term that originally only included pregnancy diagnosis. We at the ‘TAVISTOCK VETERINARIANS' interpret this term to include veterinary involvement in the overall health management of our dairy herds. Monitoring the productivity and health status of a dairy herd is essential. This starts with reproductive management, as this is the cornerstone of any successful dairy. This involves bi-weekly or weekly visits to the farm (depending on herd size), with reproductive exams driven by lists from DC 305. We currently offer data entry of all herd information free of charge into Dairy Comp 305. This is a very important step, as it gives us a baseline of the dairy’s performance and allows us to measure change.

These on farm visits also allow other monitoring systems to be implemented so that problems (i.e. elevated bulk tank somatic cell counts) can be identified and remedied before they grow to serious economic proportions. Monitoring allows us to see trends that occur overtime. If these trends indicate disease, low production or other deviations from the accepted norm then our practice will, in consultation with you, the dairy farmer, implement an action plan.

Since we feel strongly about disease prevention, we work with our producers to build vaccination (and treatment) protocols that work for their budget, facilities and goals.

We feel strongly in being a part of the dairy’s success, and therefore we strongly believe in working with the other advisors to the dairy as a team. We try to foster ongoing communication with nutritionists, custom field operators, accountants and bankers (“Management Teams”).

For herds that currently do not have a nutritionist or would like an unbiased opinion, we offer nutritional consulting. For some herds this may include full ration balancing, while others have us consult during times of disease or poor production.
