Our History

Veterinary medicine has a long history in the village of Tavistock. As early as 1883, a veterinarian Wm. Steel was practicing from his location at Lot 24 conc. 15 North Easthope. The earliest "horse doctor" in Tavistock was Dr Philip Herold. He maintained his barns at the corner of Jacob and Woodstock St N.

Dr George Burton graduated from OVC in 1937. We consider Dr Burton as the founder of our practice. He practiced with Dr Herold for 1 year after graduation and then set up his own business in the Baechlor block in 1938. In 1947 he built a new home and office at 90 Hope St E. from this location he and his wife Gert provided excellent dedicated service to the community and surrounding area until his retirement in 1977.

During this span of 40 years other associates who worked with Dr. Burton were Dr Tom Melady, Dr Dick Tenbergen and Walter Schultz. In 1977 Dr Burton sold the practice and property to Dr Bruce Robb. In 1978 Dr John Chesney joined the practice. Two years later (1980) Dr Wayne Shewfelt became the third member of the practice. The practice progressed as a 3 person practice until 1988 when Dr Robb resigned and Dr Allister Scorgie joined the practice.

The clinic location was moved to our present location at 25 Hope St in 1982. At that time the building used one side of the residential duplex while tenants occupied the other. In 1984 the practice utilized the entire building and in 1989 the practice purchased the Hickson property thus providing our second location. In the same year Dr. Westlake joined our large animal contingent. Dr Paul Hause joined the practice in 1997 to work with the small animal clients.
Our support staff has increased proportionately with the complement of veterinarians to maintain our high standards of service excellence.
